Proactiv ... "We Own Acne"

Proactive_jessica_simpson Very interesting article in the New York Times about Proactive Treatment -  the popular acne treatment that we've all seen Jessica Simpson and Diddy pitch on TV.  What Proactive has done is nothing less than turn the entire industry on its head - marketing acne not as an annoyance but as a "menace on par with heart disease."

Full article here.  A few interesting clips below.

"Proactiv has become a phenomenon by transforming the way consumers think about pimples. The brand captured public attention by hiring stars for its infomercials like Vanessa Williams, Jessica Simpson and Sean Combs to lay bare their valiant struggles to attain flawless skin, effectively turning acne into a celebrity malady. But the company’s real innovation was repositioning mild breakouts from a routine annoyance that a dab of Clearasil might fix to a preventable condition, like cavities, requiring vigilant daily upkeep.

The brand now has more than five million active customers and annual worldwide sales of about $850 million, 70 percent of which are in the United States. By contrast, sales of acne products in American drugstores were about $155 million for the year that ended July 15, according to Information Resources Inc., a market research firm.

“Right now, we own acne,” said Greg Renker, a chief executive of Guthy-Renker, the direct-response television company that sells Proactiv"

[…] Rarely do we write about things we aren’ t happy with, but here’ s a product that I recently purchased that just didn’ t live up to my expectations: Neutrogena’ s On- the- Spot Acne Treatment. I paid about 6; maybe a buck more, maybe a buck less, but should have opted for one of the other acne treatments. Shopgirl_ trang’ s recent posts about facial soaps inspired me to be better to my skin and to seek out remedies for what ails me. […]
